Last legal obstacle in Bitar's way removed as accusatory body issues ruling

The accusatory body overseeing the lawsuit against Beirut port blast investigator Judge Tarek Bitar on Wednesday issued a ruling upholding the dismissal of the case previously made by Judge Habib Rizkallah.

The chamber, headed by Judge Elias Eid and including advisors Pierre Francis and Rabih Houssami, based its decision on the reasoning provided by Rizkallah while adding its own justification.

Specifically, the accusatory body rejected on procedural grounds the appeal submitted by former Director General of Customs Badri Daher, while accepting on procedural grounds the appeal submitted by former Minister Ali Hassan Khalil but rejecting it on its merits.

This decision is seen as removing the last legal obstacles preventing the investigating judge from completing his work and paving the way for Bitar to issue his long-awaited ruling in one of the most sensitive legal cases in Lebanon.
