PSP: Jumblat Stressed to Asir the Need to Prevent Syria Unrest from Spreading to Lebanon

The Progressive Socialist Party stressed on Tuesday that the party’s criticism of the Syrian regime is not linked to the internal Lebanese situation.

It said in a statement: “PSP leader MP Walid Jumblat emphasized during his recent meeting with Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir the need to prevent the unrest in Syria from spreading to Lebanon.”

“He had also voiced his position that all issues that may create disputes in Lebanon must be avoided,” it said.

The MP had held talks with the Salafist cleric on Saturday.

On Monday, Asir, the imam of the Bilal bin Rabbah mosque in the southern city of Sidon, had called for staging a demonstration in downtown Beirut in support of the residents of besieged city of Homs.

The PSP demanded that all forms of support for the Syrian people “must be symbolic and expressed in a civilized manner in order to avert any tensions that are caused by popular gatherings.”

It continued: “Jumblat’s position is stable in that he is keen on preserving the current Lebanese government.”

“The party will remain a member the diverse factions that comprise the government,” it added.

This statement was made in reference to Hizbullah official Ammar al-Moussawi’s remarks on Monday that the Lebanese opposition is not the only side banking on the collapse of the Syrian regime, “but some sides in government are also counting on it.”

“The PSP is keen on maintaining civil peace in Lebanon regardless of the differences in opinion in the Lebanese government over the Syrian crisis,” said the Progressive Socialist Party.
