Speaker Nabih Berri has stressed that insisting on the finance portfolio for the Shiite community is not aimed at “tripartite or quadripartite power-sharing.”
“It was approved at the Taif meetings, not only discussed, and that’s why I’m adhering to it,” Berri said in an interview with the Asas Media news portal, in which he detailed his deliberations with Hussein al-Husseini, Rafik Hariri, Elias Hrawi, Saud al-Faisal, Hekmat al-Shahabi and Hafez al-Assad in this regard.
Former MP Boutros Harb, who attended the Taif meetings, has meanwhile stressed that the idea of permanently allocating the finance portfolio to the Shiite community was merely discussed at the Taif meetings without being approved by the attending MPs.
According to media reports, the issue of the finance portfolio is one of the hurdles that are currently delaying the formation of Nawaf Salam’s government.
