Speaker Nabih Berri stressed on Thursday that Lebanon is committed to the drilling of oil within all of its maritime borders.
He said that “Lebanon is determined to invest in its petroleum and gas wealth.”
The speaker made his statements after holding talks with U.S. State Department special coordinator on Middle East affairs Frederick Hof, who voiced his country’s readiness to assist Lebanon in this mission.
Parliament had approved in 2010 a law that allows the country to explore its offshore oil and gas wealth.
In July 2011, a dispute erupted between Lebanon and Israel over the maritime borders between the two countries.
Israel had recently announced that it had reached an agreement with Cyprus to excavate for oil in the Mediterranean.
