Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour has made changes in the positions of 83 third rank diplomats and vowed to make more modifications in other posts.
Mansour’s decision on Tuesday included bringing back 13 diplomats from missions abroad into the foreign ministry in Beirut. It also gave 52 diplomats posts in Lebanese missions in different countries in the world.
The remaining 18 diplomats were transferred from one mission to another.
Mansour told reporters at Bustros Palace that he would make new decisions soon to transfer counselors at general consulates and replace them with diplomats from the ranks of secretary.
He also promised to improve the ranks of several diplomats, including the appointment of 34 new ambassadors to vacant positions.
The new move came as a source close to President Michel Suleiman said officials should abide by the rules in the appointments of civil servants.
Suleiman “holds onto a mechanism adopted by the cabinet on the issue of appointments,” he said, stressing that any appointment outside this mechanism won’t have any chance of government approval.
The source was referring to alleged attempts by ministers loyal to Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun to impose candidates, not abiding by the cabinet’s decision.
A government crisis erupted last Wednesday after Suleiman suspended sessions at Miqati’s request following a bickering with Aoun’s ministers on the names of candidates for the post of the Higher Disciplinary Council, which is linked to the premier’s office.
