Supporters of powerful Iraqi cleric Moqtada Sadr on Wednesday penetrated the capital's high-security Green Zone, home to government buildings and diplomatic missions, an AFP reporter said.
The protesters, opposed to a rival bloc's nomination for prime minister, tried to march towards parliament but were stopped by police firing a barrage of tear gas, a security source told AFP.
An AFP correspondent saw protesters carrying one colleague who had been hurt.
