Suleiman Reportedly Seeking ‘New Style’ in Cabinet’s Work

Environment Minister Nazem al-Khoury, who is loyal to President Michel Suleiman, revealed on Friday that the head of state has launched mediation efforts to resolve the dispute between Premier Najib Miqati and Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun.

Al-Khoury told An Nahar daily that Suleiman “is seeking to revive the cabinet sessions and the government’s work by either contacting the prime minister or the rest of the parties.”

He said the president’s efforts aimed at bringing “new style” to the cabinet’s functions.

Despite his claims, An Nahar said that not a single mediation has been made yet between Aoun and Miqati.

The dispute erupted on Wednesday after ministers loyal to Aoun rejected the names of candidates which they said Miqati was trying to impose on them in the appointments of civil servants linked to the premier’s office.

Miqati asked Suleiman to suspend the session and announced that he would not call for new sessions if the government was going to remain unproductive.

The environment minister told An Nahar that Suleiman has sought to convince ministers loyal to the FPM chief to achieve consensus on the appointments linked to the premiership.

“There is no excuse for the expression of reservations or for the objection of the candidates that are competent,” al-Khoury stressed.

Suleiman has asked the FPM ministers to inform him and Miqati about any reservations they have on a certain person, he said.
