Polling stations opened Saturday in Algeria's first parliamentary election since a popular uprising forced longtime autocratic president Abdelaziz Bouteflika from office in 2019.
The authorities are seeking to bolster their legitimacy and snuff out the Hirak pro-democracy protest movement that mobilised hundreds of thousands of people to stop the ailing Bouteflika's bid for a fifth term.
