A Palestinian attacked Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank late Monday before being shot and "neutralised," the army said, with Palestinian officials reporting the man had died.
The Israeli army said the knife-wielding assailant had arrived in a car from Nablus and tried to stab a soldier manning a checkpoint south of the city.
"Another soldier responded by firing at the terrorist and neutralising him," it said in a statement, adding that no soldiers were injured in the attack.
On Tuesday the army was not able to provide AFP with details on the condition of the alleged attacker.
The Palestinian health ministry and security sources said the 36-year-old, Mohammed Adwe, was shot dead by Israeli soldiers at the site.
"A Palestinian was killed after the (Israeli) occupation forces opened fire on him," the ministry said late Monday, without elaborating on the circumstances.
The West Bank was hit by a bout of unrest in December as tensions eased in the Gaza Strip. They later also eased in the West Bank.
