The cabinet will most likely deliberate on a fourth decision on the wage hike next week as the Shura Council is inclined to disapprove a proposal made by Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas, An Nahar daily said Saturday.
The third government decision came last week after Nahhas made a proposal to set the minimum wage at LL868,000 – a sum that includes a LL236,000 transportation allowance.
The cabinet decision also says that workers earning less than LL1.5 million should receive an 18 percent increase while salaries between LL1.5 million and LL2.5 million should receive an additional 10 percent on the second salary bracket. Wages above LL2.5 million will not earn an additional raise.
The raise is effective as of December 1, 2011.
The decision has been referred to the Shura Council for its green light.
But the Council, which is expected to issue its verdict on Tuesday a day before a cabinet session, will most likely express reservations on Nahhas’ proposal.
An Nahar said that the minister sought hard to convince members of the Shura Council to adopt some amendments that he had proposed to the wage hike. But his efforts went in vain.
Informed sources also told al-Liwaa daily that the Council will refer the decision back to the government which will now face the hurdle of issuing a fourth decision on the wage boost.
The new hike should be based on a decision reached between the General Labor Confederation and the Economic Committees to set the minimum wage at LL 675,000 without the transportation allowance, they said.
