Sources close to caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri revealed that he had informed Prime Minister-designate Najib Miqati during the parliamentary consultations “that I have not agreed on anything” as long as the Saudi-Syrian initiative and the Qatari-Turkish efforts to end the Lebanese political crisis have failed, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat Saturday.
He added addressing Miqati: “Based on that, no one should put words in my mouth or quote me as saying that I have agreed to this point or that. I ask you not to quote me as agreeing on anything as I gave not agreed to a thing and anything other than that is not true.”
The sources said that Miqati made due with Hariri’s statements and left the meeting without making a comment.
They explained that Hariri, through this position, is seeking to prevent him and the March 8 camp from employing any stand he had made during the Saudi-Syrian negotiations or Turkish-Qatari efforts that would imply that he supports the new government’s halting of cooperation between it and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
Leading Mustaqbal sources interpreted this position as an attempt to thwart opposition claims that Hariri’s commitment to the S-S regarding the STL and the indictment still stands and therefore Miqati can go ahead and sever Lebanese ties with the tribunal without having to be concerned.
