Speaker Nabih Berri said on Monday that the political parties should discuss thoroughly the possibility of adopting the Orthodox proposal regarding the parliamentary electoral law.
“This proposal is the result of the developments locally and in the region and is due to mounting fears (the Christians) have,” Berri’s visitors quoted him as saying.
The Orthodox proposal allows each sect to choose its own representatives based on proportional representation during the 2013 parliamentary elections.
The visitors told An Nahar newspaper that Berri admitted there is a “real problem” that requires a “proper” solution.
“The solution must ensure the rights of Christians and everyone else,” the speaker noted.
According to al-Joumhouria newspaper, Berri refused to declare his opinion over the issue saying: “We shouldn’t tackle this proposal on the basis if we support it or oppose it…”
Maronite leaders agreed on Friday to support the Orthodox proposal, saying they would discuss their suggestion with the rest of the Lebanese factions.
