Aoun: We Haven’t Decided if We Will Participate in Wednesday’s Cabinet Session

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun warned on Tuesday that if the situation in Lebanon continues the way it does, then the government will collapse.

He said after the Change and Reform bloc’s weekly meeting: “We have not yet decided if we will participate in cabinet’s session on Wednesday.”

“We will take the decision tomorrow after lunch,” he added.

“The resignation of government does not mean that the ministers will halt their duties, but they will continue their roles until a new cabinet is formed,” he stated.

“If the situation persists, then those who have been demanding the resignation of the cabinet would have been right,” Aoun noted.

On November 25, the Change and Reform ministers did not attend a scheduled cabinet session due to their “annoyance” with the way projects they have proposed had been dealt with.

The FPM leader did not indicate which line of action the bloc will take, saying that it will “make a small surprise” every once in a while.

“If the situation is so out of control, then we will step down and we can do so whenever we want,” the MP stressed.

He denied that Marada Movement leader MP Suleiman Franjieh was mediating between the bloc and Prime Minister Najib Miqati in order to end the dispute.

Aoun also thanked Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s support for the Change and Reform bloc’s demands.

The party chief had stated earlier on Tuesday during the Ashura Day commemoration: “We stress the importance of the Change and Reform bloc’s demands and we urge Miqati to exercise his responsibilities.”

In an indirect reference to President Michel Suleiman, Aoun said: “Others should understand that we represent the people and we will not hand over power to those who don’t have proper representation.”

“We are working for the whole of Lebanon and they should protest whenever we discriminate against anyone,” he remarked.

Sarcastically addressing the government, Aoun asked: “What has it done in six months besides fund the Special Tribunal for Lebanon under French and American warnings?”
