Palestinian Stabs, Wounds Israeli in East Jerusalem

A Palestinian stabbed and wounded an Israeli in Jerusalem's Old City on Friday and fled the scene before being detained, police said.

The victim, an ultra-Orthodox man around 30 years old, was taken to hospital with stab wounds to his torso, medics said.

Police said they caught the perpetrator who was hiding in an alley in the Old City, identifying him as a 19-year-old from Qabalan, a West Bank town north of Ramallah.

Friday's attack was the latest in a wave of violence that has killed 188 Palestinians, 28 Israelis, two Americans, an Eritrean and a Sudanese since October 1, according to an AFP count.

Most of the Palestinians were killed while carrying out knife, gun or car-ramming attacks, which have taken place more or less daily over the past five months.

Others were shot dead by Israeli forces during clashes or demonstrations.

Many analysts say Palestinian frustration with Israeli occupation and settlement building in the West Bank, the complete lack of progress in peace efforts and their own fractured leadership have fed the unrest.

Israel blames incitement by Palestinian leaders and media as a main cause of the violence.

It has stepped up arrests of Palestinians in Israel without work permits, arresting more than 400 over the past two days.

An Israeli official said it appeared the Friday stabber did not possess a permit to be in annexed Arab east Jerusalem.
