Israel's Peres Released from Hospital after Heart Arrhythmia

Former Israeli president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres was released from hospital Tuesday, his office said, two days after he was rushed there with chest pains and an irregular heartbeat.

Peres "was admitted to the hospital on Sunday evening following a slight heart arrhythmia, and remained in the hospital an extra day for observation at the request of the medical team," a statement said.

"All test results were normal and he has now been released home" from the Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv, it added.

The 92-year-old was hospitalized on January 14 for a heart condition and underwent catheterisation to widen an artery.

He was released on January 19 but forced to cancel a planned trip the following day to the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he had scheduled 15 meetings with world leaders and international officials.

A co-architect of the 1993 Oslo peace accords, Peres won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with then Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated the following year, and the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The last of Israel's founding fathers, Peres has held nearly every major office in the country, including prime minister twice and president from 2007 to 2014.
