New York's 'Salon du Chocolat' Goes Broadway

Lovers of chocolate and musicals met on Broadway at the opening of the New York Chocolate Show, which started with a parade of models -- dressed in chocolate.

Broadway is the theme of this year's event and spectators welcomed 13 new creations including a "Lion King" mask and tail in dark chocolate, Roxy from the musical "Chicago," in a chocolate-encrusted miniskirt, bowler hat and cane, and a French cancan dancer whose head wore a chocolate Eiffel Tower.

The show, which opens three weeks after its older, Paris counterpart, the Salon du Chocolat, is hosting more than 60 exhibitors in its 14th edition, which runs from Thursday to Sunday.

The chocolate sculptures required much work from designers and noted chefs, with the Lion King creation needing 12 hours of work from a three-person team, its leader Deborah Pellegrino told AFP.

Visitors at the event can sample chocolate from its best creators, listen to experts who may disclose a tip or two, and buy books on the subject.

The dresses used in Wednesday's parade will also be on display, alongside a small-scale model of the Broadway district, all in chocolate.
