President Michel Suleiman called on Monday for amending the law that established the Constitutional Council to keep it away from the bickering between Lebanese politicians.
“It’s necessary to entrust the task of interpreting the Constitution to the Constitutional Council and this requires an amendment,” Suleiman said in a speech at the opening of the conference of the Union of Arab Constitutional Courts and Councils at the Bristol Hotel in Beirut.
Suleiman also called for “amending the law that established the Council in terms of appointments to keep it away from politics.”
In May 2009, the Cabinet appointed the final five members of the Council. The other half of the 10-member Council is appointed by the Parliament.
“Flaws in legislation could lead to the destabilization of the unity of society and could undermine the state,” Suleiman said.
“An electoral law is the essence of reform … the developments in the region compel us to make constitutional reforms,” the president said.
Suleiman also called for an electoral law that guarantees the right representation for all constituents in a democratic system. “It’s time to adopt such a law.”
