Egypt's government on Wednesday approved the demolition of the headquarters of the once-dominant party of toppled president Hosni Mubarak that was torched during the 2011 uprising.
Angry protesters demanding the ouster of Mubarak's regime ransacked and set fire to the headquarters of his National Democratic Party (NDP), located in the heart of Cairo near Tahrir Square, epicenter of the uprising.
Army engineers will carry out the demolition, Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab's office announced in a statement.
"The cabinet has given its approval for the Cairo governorate to start procedures for the demolition of the National Party building," it said.
The party was ordered officially dissolved in 2011 but a court in July lifted a ban on former members running in elections.
Mahlab himself was a senior official in the NDP.
