Israeli Officer Wounded in Golan by Gunfire from Syria

An Israeli army officer was wounded Tuesday by gunfire from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, the military said, in what was believed to have been a deliberate attack.

"During a routine IDF (Israel defense force) activity in the Golan Heights, shots were fired at an IDF force," a statement read.

"An IDF officer was lightly injured as a result."

Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner told Agence France-Presse that the shots were "direct fire."

There has been repeated shooting across the ceasefire line since the uprising in Syria erupted in March 2011, some of it stray.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometers (460 square miles) of the Golan from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and annexed it in 1981 in a move never recognized by the international community.

Syria and Israel are still officially in a state of war.
