Police Arrest Canadian With Links to IS Group

Federal police Tuesday arrested a Canadian with ties to the Islamic State group for allegedly helping others join the jihadists, Canadian authorities said.

International warrants were also issued through Interpol for the arrest of two other men, including a Canadian reportedly killed in Syria, for joining the banned terror group.

Awso Peshdary, 25, is in custody in Ottawa.

He had been previously arrested as part of another investigation, but was released due to a lack of evidence, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Chief Superintendent Jennifer Strachan told a press conference.

Khadar Khalib, 23, and John Maguire, 24, were charged in absentia with leaving Canada to join the Islamic State. Khalib is also accused of recruiting for IS.

Both were active on social media denouncing Canada and its allies in their fight against IS. Maguire was said to have been killed in 2013 but police said they have not confirmed the reports.
