Grand imam of al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb condemned on Saturday the position of Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi on Christians in the East.
“The Christians in the east are part of the national fabric in the states,” al-Tayeb said during a meeting with Lebanese Ambassador to Egypt Khaled Ziade.
He stressed that “there exists tolerance and coexistence between the two sides.”
Al-Rahi said that Syrian President Bashar Assad should be given the chance to introduce reform over his fear that the collapse of the regime would lead to the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood to power in Syria, which could threaten Christians over there.
