Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat held talks Thursday in Moscow with Aleksey Pushkov, head of the foreign affairs committee in the Russian Duma.
The meeting was attended by Jumblat's son Taimur, Health Minister Wael Abu Faour and PSP official Halim Abu Fakhreddine.
“Talks tackled the current political developments in Lebanon and the Middle East,” the PSP said in a statement.
Al-Joumhouria newspaper reported earlier on Thursday that Jumblat is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting will be held “if the circumstances allowed it,” the newspaper said.
However, the PSP leader later denied via his Twitter account that he intends to meet with Putin while in Moscow, noting that he will meet instead with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Jumblat traveled to Moscow at the head of a delegation on Wednesday evening and will return on Saturday.
Sources close to the PSP said that the visit comes in light of an invitation by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
