Berlin Urges Mideast Rivals to Bury Differences to Fight IS

Germany is urging Iran, Turkey and Arab countries to put their "old rivalries aside" to combat the Islamic State (IS) militants, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in an interview to appear Sunday.

"We are trying to persuade Arab countries, Turkey and Iran that we have to fight together against IS," he told the Tagesspiegel am Sonntag newspaper.

Steinmeier, who will meet Saudi leaders Sunday on a trip to Jeddah, said he was also working for "Turkey to take an active role fighting against IS."

The extremist group, which controls of swathes of Iraq and Syria, has recently taken a large part of the majority-Kurdish town of Kobane on Syria's border with Turkey, with the United Nations saying it was fearful for the lives of thousands of civilians there if it falls.
