Arms Seized at Syrian's Residence in Tripoli

A Syrian man was arrested by the army on Wednesday and a quantity of arms and ammunition was seized at his house, amid a continued crackdown on Syrians residing in Lebanon.

An army statement said troops raided the residence of “Hussam Sobhi Qarraja in the Tripoli area of al-Zahriyeh where he was arrested.”

“A quantity of machineguns, hand grenades, ammunition and military equipment of various types” was found in the possession of the man, the army added.

“Electronic devices” were also seized at Qarraja's house.

The detainee and the confiscated material were handed over to the competent authorities for further investigations, according to the army statement.

In the wake of the deadly Arsal clashes last month, army intelligence agents raided places of residence and camps inhabited by Syrians across all Lebanese regions, arresting many individuals after obtaining the authorization of the judiciary.

Top Islamist militant Imad Jomaa, whose arrest sparked Arsal's unprecedented fighting, has reportedly confessed that he had been plotting to establish an “Islamic emirate” in the North and the Bekaa in collaboration with dormant cells present in several regions, claims that were later denied by his lawyer.
