Fugitives Turn Themselves in to Army in Tripoli as Another Arrested

A number of fugitives have turned themselves in to the army in the northern city of Tripoli while a man wanted on multiple arrest warrants has been arrested.

"As part of the continued security measures, army forces raided the hideouts of several fugitives in the city of Tripoli," the Army Command said in a statement on Monday.

During the raids, troops "arrested Fadi Ahmed Anwar Sabouneh, who was wanted on multiple arrest warrants on charges of opening fire, hurling hand grenades and attacking military forces," the statement added.

Meanwhile, the fugitives Nizar Majdi al-Mawlawi, Mohammed Mustafa al-Dik, Midhat Mohieddine al-Ahdab and Ibrahim Samir al-Mustafa -- who were also wanted on multiple arrest warrants -- turned themselves in to the army's intelligence directorate in the city, according to the same statement.

"The detainees are being interrogated under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities," the statement added.

Eight soldiers were injured last week when their patrol came under an armed attack in Tripoli as they were carrying out raids to arrest gunmen.

In April, the army deployed heavily in Tripoli and started implementing a major security plan devised by the government to end violence in the city. The plan took into consideration the recommendations of the Higher Defense Council.

Tripoli witnessed around 20 rounds of deadly gunbattles in recent years between the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen and the war in neighboring Syria has further exacerbated sectarian tensions between the two districts.

The security plan has resulted in the arrest of dozens of gunmen and fugitives in Tripoli and the Bekaa but a lot of wanted men have managed to escape.
