Pirme Minister Najib Miqati stressed on Tuesday that the critical developments in the region should force the Lebanese to fortify the internal scene against any dangers that might spread into the country
He asked during a Ramadan iftar: “How can Lebanon benefit from getting involved in the regional developments?”
“This is what drove us to disassociate ourselves from the United Nations Security Council statement condemning the violence in Syria,” he explained.
“This position was met by understanding by the international community and members of the Security Council,” the premier noted
Lebanon could have prevented the Security Council from issuing the statement, but it didn’t, allowing itself to remain objective on the regional developments, “because no Lebanese can support violence and stand against reform,” Miqati added.
“At the same time, no Lebanese can possibly believe that Lebanon may affect international decisions or the internal situation of any country,” he remarked.
“So why should we involve ourselves in matters that will harm Lebanon’s unity?” he asked.
“All the Lebanese should unite in order to allow the government to perform its duties and lift the burdens off the people,” he stated.
Addressing the developments in Syria, Miqati said: “The bloody violence, which Lebanon has experienced for years, cannot be the solution to the conflict in Syria and it cannot substitute for dialogue.”
“On this note, we must praised Saudi King Abdullah’s call for the halt of bloodshed in Syria and the speeding up of reform,” the prime minister noted.
