Charbel: All Politicians in Lebanon Could be Target of Assassinations

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel has warned that all politicians in Lebanon were under the threat of being targeted in assassination attempts.

In remarks to pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat published on Sunday, Charbel said: “Security forces are taking measures in coordination with several personalities, who are threatened to be assassinated in Lebanon, including caretaker PM Najib Miqati.”

His remark came after reports that Miqati's name was on the list of politicians who are targeted.

The security forces are “also taking measures on the level of the entire country to preserve the safety of citizens,” Charbel said.

The caretaker minister refused to name the personalities who are under the assassination threat, saying “every person who deals with public affairs is threatened.”

A car bomb blew up Saturday near a gas station in the town of Hermel in northeast Lebanon, killing several people.

The bomb was the second to hit Hermel, in the latest attack that appeared linked to the war in neighboring Syria.

Charbel said that "given the human remains in the car and next to it, it seems like a suicide attack, but we will not rush to judgment.”
