Qahwaji Warns Army Ready to Respond to Any Aggression

Army Commander Gen. Jean Qahwaji warned on Monday that the military would respond in case the country is subjected to an Israeli military attack.

“The army has the full capability to respond to any Israeli aggression,” Qahwaji said after he inspected army units in Marjeyoun, which lies eight kilometers from the border with Israel.

The military “will not succumb to any threat,” he said, adding it will “immediately respond to any aggression.”

Qahwaji also visited the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon that lies in Naqoura and the command of the army's eighth brigade in al-Zahrani.

He lauded the sacrifices made by U.N. peacekeepers, who are spending the holidays away from their families.

The army chief reiterated that the military was committed to the implementation of all Security Council resolutions, mainly 1701.

The resolution, which put an end to a 34-day war between Israel and Hizbullah in August 2006, demanded the pullout of the Israeli army from south Lebanon and its replacement by a U.N.-backed Lebanese army deployment.

It also called for the disarming of all militias -- an allusion to Hizbullah as well as to Palestinian militant groups -- and the prevention of illegal arms sales and smuggling operations in Lebanon.
