2 Syrian Children Dead in Zahle Roof Collapse

Two Syrian children were killed and their father injured in a roof collapse in the eastern Bekaa Valley, the state-run National News Agency reported on Wednesday.

NNA said Jacqueline Riyad Mahmoudo, 6, and her three-year-old sister Lava died when part of the roof of their house collapsed in Hezzerta that lies near the city of Zahle.

Their father was lightly injured in the roof collapse of the two-story house, it said.

Many Syrians in Lebanon live in appalling conditions, finding shelter in slums, tents, tin shacks and old houses.

A residential building, whose owner had violated construction regulations in the northern city of Tripoli, was evacuated on Friday over fears it would collapse.

NNA said the building, which is located in Abi Samra district, was evacuated after cracks began appearing in its walls and foundations.

Tripoli municipality had on several occasions warned the owner that the seven-story building cannot sustain an addition of two more stories but he went head with the construction.

Several buildings have collapsed in different parts of Lebanon in the past few years, the worst of which was in January 2012 when a six-story residential building came crushing down in Beirut's Ashrafiyeh district, leaving scores of casualties.
