ISF, Army Come Under Fire over Illegal Construction in North

Residents of the northern town of Alma on Thursday opened fire on armed forces that were trying to demolish illegal construction, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said that while two bulldozers backed by the Internal Security Forces Panthers Unit and army troops were trying to remove the violations caused by 35 houses constructed illegally, several residents opened fire on them.

The army later carried out raids to find the shooters.

The residents of the town, which lies in Zgharta district, have in the past week been holding protests against the demolition.

Both the mayor and municipal chief have insisted that the issue is legal and not sectarian as claimed by some.

Lebanon witnessed over the years illegal construction in several areas mainly in the Beirut southern suburb of Ouzai. But powerful politicians shield violators.
